So You Think You're Ready?

No doubt about it, you’ve got the stuff: in-depth knowledge of the hottest tunes and how to mix it. Is this enough to be a successful and in demand DJ? Far from it. Having the fire and desire to become a professional DJ is elemental, but it involves so many complex decisions and investments that only some dedicated research is going to pave the way to being so successful you can turn away business.

Equipment

Start-up costs can be huge if you want the right gear to compete and make your DJ magic stand out. Even the basic DJ package (turntable/mixer, headphones, sound system) can be hundreds of dollars minimum. Add-ons (light shows, fog machines) can add even more costs. And customers are fickle, always looking for some new dazzle from a DJ.

  • Consider renting equipment so you can try out a wide selection before investing
  • If you do want to buy, a package deal with the basics may be the smart way to start

Business Savvy

You’re going to need to do some more intensive research and learning on the business side of being a DJ.

  • Is your local area already saturated with DJ talent?
  • Are you able to work all hours and all days of the week?
  • Do you have a solid day job to help make the transition from part-time to pro DJ?
  • Contracts and taxes are two areas you’ll need have fine tuned.

Making your customer happy is crucial in establishing a reputation as a hot DJ. And your customer might not be who you think! For example, club owners are looking for a DJ who can keep the dance floor busy but still leaving a crowd eating and drinking, which is the money maker for them! It takes some planning to keep the mix wrapped around the ebb and flow of club clientele.

Another way to break in is to agree to be a free apprentice to an established DJ. In exchange for equipment toting and setting up, you can get the insider view of what it is like to be a professional DJ from someone who’s already gone through the lean years.
